Harry Bratt, a Graphic Designer based in Staffordshire, England. Since graduating from Leeds Arts University in 2023 with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Graphic Design, I have cultivated a design practice specializing in Branding and Editorial Design where I’m driven to produce visually striking and contemporary work that effectively develops and articulates the intended core message. My approach involves a significant emphasis on exploring different avenues and experimenting with emerging possibilities within the ideation process. This iterative approach enables me to identify the most optimal conceptual and aesthetic outcomes.

This self-initiated university research and design project, titled ‘Pastiche and Homage in Present Contemporary Fashion: A Conceptual Exploration Through Modern Design Tools,’ investigated the dialogue between Modernism and Postmodernism through the lens of cultural movement blending. The project explored whether Modernist techniques could resonate with contemporary audiences within a Postmodern framework.

The Modernist technique of pastiche – defined as a respectful imitation of another artist's style – was central to the project. The homage focused on the extensive, candid black and white street photography of Vivian Maier. A nanny by profession, Maier prolifically documented the nuances of everyday life in New York and Chicago from the 1950s to the 1990s, capturing authentic moments of human interaction. Her vast archive of over 150,000 negatives remained private until her passing in 2007, after which her work was discovered and subsequently brought to international acclaim by John Maloof. This project aimed to commemorate Maier's significant, posthumously recognized body of work.

Maier's photography was thematically categorized (childhood, location, reality) and presented in diverse layouts. Utilizing the contemporary 3D modeling software 'Blender,' a three-dimensional umbrella was created as a structural motif for displaying these layouts, referencing Maier's role as a nanny – a symbolic 'Mary Poppins' of photography. This venture into 3D modeling represented an exploration of modern techniques applied to a pastiche concept. Stills from various angles of the 3D umbrella layouts were then compiled into a repeating pattern and printed onto a button-down shirt, aiming to engage a contemporary streetwear and fashion audience.

The project successfully created a respectful homage to Vivian Maier's work by representing it through a contemporary lens. By employing the pastiche concept via 3D modeling software, the project effectively amalgamated Modernist and Postmodernist approaches, resulting in a contemporary interpretation of homage within a tangible fashion format.
