Santu - "Scream" Single Artwork (Commissioned - September 2022)

Birmingham-based Indie/Rock band Santu, known for their distinctive and assertive sound and powerful stage presence (playing for Isle of Wight Festival, Absolute Radio & O2 Academy), commissioned artwork for their debut single, "Scream." The brief requested a unique black and white design to represent their classic yet euphoric rock sound with intense vocals. Responding to the title's verbal prompt and the band's sonic intensity, the design concept employed a densely populated composition of screeching and haunting faces in silhouette. This aimed to convey distress and unease within the square format. A linework silhouette style was chosen to create a dark and mystic aesthetic, complementing the monochrome palette. The resulting album cover became Santu's primary visual identity for the single, extending to tour materials, social media content, and merchandise. This initial project established a strong working relationship with the band, leading to a subsequent commission for their 4-track EP, "Fulvetta Act 1."

Following the successful single artwork, Santu commissioned a cover for their 4-track EP, "Fulvetta Act 1," a collection of high-octane progressive rock tracks with soulful vocals. The design for the lead track, "Fly High," focused on visually representing themes of evolution and growth through the imagery of a bird. The concept juxtaposed a flying bird silhouette with that of a sorrowful woman, symbolizing transformation and release. A minimal, dotted style was applied to the bird, creating an elegant and mystifying contrast with the implied emotional weight. The intense graphic was intentionally foregrounded, with a red and black colour palette filling the negative space. This design visually conveyed the EP's sonic landscape and Santu's artistic progression, showcasing a more decisive and refined visual approach. This collaboration has fostered an ongoing relationship with the band, allowing for a continued partnership in translating their sound into compelling visual artwork.
